Hattingen belongs to the “Arbeitsgemeinschaft Historische Stadtkerne in Nordrhein-Westfalen” (association of historical city centres in North Rhine-Westphalia). In 1999, the community of Hattingen was joined by the communities of Welper and Bruch.
The city of Hattingen has been included in the “Westfalischer Hansebund” since 2015. This community wants to revive the medieval Hanseatic traditions.
The town faces the challenge of structural change. In addition to modern companies and businesses, the city also aims at attracting more tourists.
